Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit Earns Case of the Quarter

An OCSO K9 narcotics bust earned Deputy Jonathan Duenas and K9 “Axel” the U.S. Police Canine Association’s “Top Detector Case of the 2nd Quarter” for Region One. Deputy Jonathan Duenas and K9 “Axel” were working as part of the OCSO Street Crimes Unit, assisting with a high risk arrest warrant on May 25, 2018.

After the suspect, 33 year old Sean Ruiz of Dell Road in Fort Walton Beach was taken into custody for drug and weapons related offenses, K9 Axel conducted a free air sniff on his vehicle in front of the residence. K9 “Axel” quickly began showing distinct indicators as he focused on the driver’s side door of the vehicle and began jumping up, a common behavior change when he locates drugs.

The vehicle was towed and a search warrant secured. During the search, a small canvas bag was found in the driver’s floorboard. It contained 97 grams of Methamphetamine, four grams of Heroin, one gram of Fentanyl, six grams of Marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Four sealed bags were also found, containing more than four pounds of marijuana.

The seizure earned the USPCA’s Top Detector Case of the Quarter. Deputy Duenas was presented the award last month at K9 Recertification Trials in Lakeland Florida.
