Ozark Traffic Stop Leads To A Shooting

OZARK, AL - On September 28th,  approximately 10:30 pm law enforcement officials with the Ozark Police Department and the Dale County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop in the area of Highway 231 and Highway 123 in Ozark.



The traffic stop was conducted due to a juvenile passenger having an active pickup order for his arrest. Law Enforcement Officer's had prior knowledge that the juvenile was armed and has made statements that he would not be taken into custody if he was approached by law enforcement officers.



Immediately after conducting the traffic stop, law enforcement officers came into contact with the juvenile, who at the time was in possession of a firearm. The officers gave several commands for the suspect to drop the weapon.



At that time the suspect pointed the weapon in the direction of the officers and shots were fired by officers. The suspect was struck one time and then he retreated into the wood line near Highway 123.



Law enforcement officers immediately lost sight of the suspect and additional units were requested to assist at the scene. Once additional officers arrived, a search of the wooded area along with several residences along Highway 123 was conducted. After searching the area for more than 3 hours, law enforcement officials were able to locate the suspect in the 4000 block of Highway 123 near Ozark. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident or injuries.



The suspect suffered from a single gunshot wound and was treated on the scene then transported to Dale Medical Center for further treatment.

Alabama Department of Youth Services

Ozark/Dale County E911


The State Bureau of Investigations are handling this case for further investigation.
