Attorney John John Steensland has witnessed the 20th Judicial Circuit’s operations for several years, and now he aspires to work with its courts in a new role.
Steensland has announced his intentions to run for 20th Judicial Circuit Judge, Place 1, in next year’s election. The seat is currently held by Judge Michael Conaway, but since Conaway is older than 70, he cannot seek re-election by state law.
Steensland will run on the Republican ticket and has opposition from local attorney Valerie Judah. He has contemplated a run for more than two years, inspired by his experiences working with the circuit that covers Henry and Houston counties.
“With my specific law practice, I’m in the courthouse weekly, if not daily,” he said. “After observing everything and how it runs, I thought I might be good in that role.”
Steensland said he discussed the possibility of the campaign with his family -- especially wife Kelsey -- and with colleagues before determining he will run.
“As my practice has gone on, I figure I have developed a good amount of patience for the position,” he said. “You have to have patience to deal with defendants, their families and even the attorneys. I did not have that patience on the athletic field, but over time I think I have developed enough of it in my career.”
