The Enterprise Police Department would like to inform the public of a phone scam in the Enterprise area targeting grandparents. In this scam, the potential victim will receive a phone call from a subject claiming to be an attorney representing their grandchild. The caller will advise the potential victim that their grandchild has been arrested and will demand money be sent immediately for attorney services. The fraudulent caller will claim that when they receive the money, the grandchild will be released on probation and not serve jail time. The caller may also advise that a “gag order” has been placed on this information and if the potential victim tells anyone about the arrest, the grandchild will not be released from custody. The caller will repeatedly insist that money be sent immediately via wire transfer.
The Enterprise Police Department has the following tips for community members:
- Anytime you receive a call and are asked in any way to send money, you should immediately be suspicious.
- Never provide any personal information or financial information to the caller.
- Never wire money, provide debit card numbers, or pre-paid card numbers to someone you do not know.
- Always independently verify information you receive from suspicious phone calls.
