DOTHAN - HOUSTON COUNTY:   On September 11 of each year we remember the emergency service workers. This date is a special day because America came under attack.

On this day 17 years ago I was just finishing the talk radio show on WWNT AM 1450 ( now WDYG ) with Larry McKee. As we were finishing the 7 AM to 8 AM hour the attacks were just starting to happen. In the 8 AM to 9 AM hour then Dothan Mayor Chester Sowell came on the air with Larry McKee.

Once at my bail bonding office I was watching the news accounts and updating McKee and Sowell. While we knew something was going on, like all Americans, we were in awe and shock as it was unfolding before our eyes.

It was not long before everyone knew America was under attack like never before. And that day we saw people who had dedicated their lives to emergency services so that others may live, die while trying to save others. We saw people on a airplane say NO WAY and attempted to take control over the flight that was hijacked. They lost their life but fought and did not sit by doing nothing.

We also witnessed how GOD had a Commander in Chief in place to take control over America. Someone to navigate America and stand our ground, and that man was President George Bush.

Emergencies do not pick victims or locations. They happen without notice. When I hear people complain about law enforcement and emergency responders driving their vehicles, I laugh at it because they do not realize how quick life changes. And that was proven on September 11, and is proven every day.

Emergency responders have to be equipped and ready to roll in seconds. Take the day the gunman killed a school bus driver in Midland City Alabama and took a child hostage and underground for 6 days. Take the gunman that started in Coffee County and into Geneva County, killing multiple people and shooting at law enforcement officers without warning.

Take in Jackson County Florida when retired Sheriff Johnny McDaniels's wife and deputy were gunned down at Sheriff McDaniels home.

All without warning. In a moments notice emergency responders from law enforcement, fire and EMS had to roll.

I am proud of the men and women in all areas of emergency service in this area. It is a honor and privilege to serve in and around each of them as I work on the 911 Board and with Dothan - Houston County Emergency Management. In this area of Southeast Alabama I think we have some fine dedicated individuals who serve everyday in various capacities.

The 911 staff, law enforcement, fire, EMS, utilities in electrical and gas, they are all emergency responders serving our community each and every day. They are prepared to roll in seconds to those in need. And the community thanks each of you for your service.

On Monday Selma Baptist Church in Dothan served lunch to emergency responders. In Ozark today Fuqua - Bankston Funeral Home served lunch to emergency responders. Others have recognized those who serve. And thanks to each that go out of their way to make sure the emergency service workers are recognized.

In Dothan - Houston County:   We have 18 fire departments; Dothan Fire Department, Kinsey Fire, Webb Fire, Cowarts Fire, Columbia Fire, Gordon Fire, Pansey Fire, Ashford Fire, Lucy Fire, Lovetown Fire, Cottonwood Fire, Hodgesville Fire, Madrid Fire, Southern Junction Fire, Rehobeth Fire, Taylor Fire, Bay Springs Fire and Wicksburg Fire.
