Gastrointestinal parasites are a major health concern for sheep and goat herds in the Southeast, and can lead to higher animal mortality rates. Therefore, enhancing fitness or health traits in sheep and goat herds are essential for long-term sustainability and profitability. To achieve these goals, it’s important for producers  to identify genetically fit animals that will achieve higher productive rates and reduce health management costs.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University in partnership with the South Carolina Kiko Goat Association and the Southeastern Kiko Goat Association are offering multistate gastrointestinal work- shops. These workshops are designed to teach sheep and goat producers the ad- vantages of conducting fecal examinations using the modified McMaster or flotation method. The McMaster method helps to de- termine worm resistance to deworming com- pounds or anthelmintics (anti-parasite drugs). It also acts as a tool to identify animals that are resilient or resistant to gastro- intestinal parasites.

As a result of attending this workshop you will learn:

  • Phenotype and selecting animals for genetic resistance to gastrointestinal parasites in sheep and goat herds

  • Hands-on microscopic identification and count (modified McMaster technique) of parasite eggs; a tool used to select resilient animals to worms.

  • Basic forage and pasture management practices to minimize gastrointestinal worm infection in sheep and goats.

Admission is free however pre-registration is appreciated.
