SLOCOMB - GENEVA COUNTY: Slocomb Fire Chief Kyle Hovey made a presentation to the Mayor of Slocomb and members of the Slocomb City Council following a regular scheduled Slocomb City Council meeting.
The meeting was a public hearing to discuss "fire districts" and the petition that would be circulated around.
Slocomb Fire Chief Hovey told the council members that funding is needed to help with providing staff for instant fire coverage. Chief Hovey said that a fire changes every minute. Having staff on duty in Slocomb allows swift response in saving lives and property.
Currently Slocomb Fire, Malvern Fire, and Faydette Fire in a automatic mutual aid call system. When one department is dispatched to a structure fire all three roll. Some of the reasons are manpower and water supplies.
Chief Hovey also told members that Slocomb Rescue currently makes around 2,500 EMS calls a year.
Slocomb is not bound to the City Limits of Slocomb. They help with the operation of the east end of Geneva County. They are also responsible for the EMS coverage in the east end of the county.
The petition calls for the Geneva County Probate Judge to allow the registered voters in the Slocomb Fire District vote on a $ 35.00 annual fee strictly for the Slocomb Fire, Alabama Forestry - Geneva County Division, and a small portion for the Geneva Fire Association.
Listen to Chief Hovey and please support the fire fee.
