FEBRUARY 9-10 • QUILT RETREAT Friday 5 p.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Taught by Sherry Burkhalter. Theme this year is Bed Runners Galore. $65, includes supper Friday, lunch Saturday, drinks and snacks. Bring your sewing machine and supplies. FEBRUARY 13-15 • FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITY: VALENTINE’S PAST Come learn how Valentine’s Day was celebrated in years past with this new seasonal session! Students will learn the history and traditions of Valentine’s Day while touring our historic buildings on site. Students will have the opportunity to make old-fashioned valentines and valentine decorations. The program will wrap up with some hot chocolate and a sweet treat for the students! **Due to the hands on nature of this program, groups are limited to approximately 30 students per session. FEBRUARY 16 • ASTRONOMY NIGHT 6 p.m.-9 p.m. View stars and planets through telescopes and binoculars, plus a starry hayride, nightwalks, planetarium programs and snacks. Admission is $4 for members, $5 for scouts and leaders in uniform and $7 for nonmembers. Free for ages 5 and under.
FEBRUARY 18 • THE STAYING KIND MOVIE AT AMC THEATRES See Landmark Park on the big screen! At 3 p.m., AMC Dothan 6 Theater will host a viewing of “The Staying Kind,” a short film about a Civil War bride’s experiences on the home front. This film was shot at Landmark Park and was written and stars Dothan native Rachel Hendrix. Rachel will attend the screening and will be available to talk with visitors. Seating is limited and advance tickets are required. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased by calling Landmark Park at 334-794-3452. Proceeds benefit Landmark Park. FEBRUARY 24-25 • FOLK WORKSHOP WEEKEND Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon and 1 p.m.-4 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Choose from a variety of topics such as chair caning, hearth cooking, pottery, gourd painting and more. FEBRUARY 27-MARCH 2 • FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITY: DR. SEUSS WEEK Celebrate Dr. Seuss Week with Landmark Park! For this unique program, students will have the opportunity to learn more about the environment around them, taught through some of Dr. Seuss’ most popular books! Students can learn about the important role trees play in the forest with The Lorax, or about the farm animals that live at Landmark Park with the help of Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? Students can also learn about the importance of two of our farm animals, chickens and hogs, while reading Green Eggs and Ham. Programs will be offered both on-site at Landmark Park or as a traveling program. Each on-site program will include hands-on activities, a short hike, and story time in nature! Each traveling program will include educational activities and story time. Select the topic you would like covered and whether you would like the program to take place at Landmark Park or in your classroom. We can customize the programs to meet your needs. Programs presented at Landmark Park can be combined with a field class, planetarium program, or mini-session. On-site programs are offered 9 a.m.-Noon and traveling programs are offered 1 p.m. –3 p.m. Cost: on-site: $8/student, traveling: $5/student + $0.54/mile, round trip Program Length: 1 hour. MARCH 6-8 AND 27-29; APRIL 3-5 AND 24-26; • FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITY: LIVING HISTORY *Costumed Program!!* Give your students the experience of living and working on a Wiregrass Farmstead in the early 1900s. Students will get the opportunity to cook on the hearth, make butter, care for the farm animals, help in the garden and more! Costumed in period dress, students will be divided into small groups in order to participate at the different workstations. This half-day program will conclude with lunch (prepared by the students) at the Waddell House, traditional games, a hay ride, and an ice cream cone served from the Martin Drugstore. **Due to the hands on nature of this program, classes are limited to a maximum of 30 students and a minimum of 20 students. MARCH 17 • SPRING FARM DAY 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Turn back the clock 100 years and experience living history demonstrations of sheep shearing, blacksmithing, plowing with mules, basket weaving, quilting and other traditional springtime farm activities. Entertainment will include traditional music. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and “jam” in the one-room schoolhouse. APRIL 1 • EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE Dothan Ministerial Union will host the 32nd annual Easter Sunrise Service at Landmark Park. The service will begin at 6:30 a.m. at the gazebo. This is an interdenominational service and is open to everyone. Benches are available but please bring lawn chairs to ensure adequate seating. In the event of rain the service will be held in the Headland Presbyterian Church located adjacent to the gazebo. Admission to the service is free. The park will close immediately after the service and re-open at noon for our regular Sunday hours.
APRIL 7 • NATURE STUDIES WEEKEND WORKSHOPS 9 a.m.-4 p.m. A series of hands-on workshops will be offered to adults who want to learn more about Alabama nature. Topics include tree identification, native bees, Alabama Water Watch certifications and more. APRIL 14 • SACRED HARP SING 10 a.m. -2:30 p.m. Traditional dinner on the grounds from noon - 1 p.m. Prior to the sing, there will be a short introduction for visitors unfamiliar with the tradition (also known as Shape Note or Fasola) beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sacred Harp singing is a nondenominational American tradition that was born out of Colonial “singing schools” whose purpose was to teach beginners how to sing. A Sacred Harp sing is not a performance, but rather a shared experience that emphasizes participation by everyone. Free with paid gate admission. Singers attending this event may simply show your songbook for free admission to the park.
APRIL 19 • VOLUNTEER KICK OFF We are revamping our Volunteer Program and this is your chance to get involved! We will recognize our existing volunteers and give info to those who are interested in joining our volunteer family. Call 334-794-3452 to register. Time TBA.
