DOTHAN:     Today Dothan Fire Department has responded to several medical emergencies as has the county EMS.

Specifically in Dothan, Dothan Fire and local EMS have responded to two major medical emergencies. One of those was a stroke alert and one was CPR in progress.

While I do not know the outcome of either medical emergency, the point of this article is different in nature.

One is awareness of the public:  know the signs and symptoms of cardiac issues and stroke issues. When someone begins to present certain symptoms, make sure you are proactive. Make the calls for emergency services and get them checked out.

Medical persons say there is a critical 3 hour window on strokes. Often times you do not know where exactly you are in the three hour window. Be proactive.

Do not hesitate to make the 911 call:    Never hesitate to make the 911 call and have EMS check the person. It is better to make the call and have them checked rather than wait until it is to late. Listen to the 911 operator. They are trained in EMERGENCY MEDICAL DISPATCH and are asking questions and giving instructions for life saving reasons. Big dollars are spent annually for the Emergency Medical Dispatch with the goal of saving lives. While the questions are being asked, the information has been placed in the computer and another 911 Dispatcher has EMS rolling. So never think they are only asking questions and then rolling help. Help is rolling as they ask the questions.

REMEMBER WE ARE A MEDICAL HUB:   Tonight was a brief example of medical emergencies presented to EMS and the hospitals. We are a medical hub. We need to maintain being a medical hub. And we are looking to the elected officials, local and state, to maintain that medical professionalism and being proactive in medical care.
