On Monday January 7th, 2018 at approximately 2:00 p.m. the Jackson County Sheriffs Office School Resource Deputy at Marianna High School was alerted about several students displaying abnormal behaviors on campus.

The SRO Deputy and School Administration went to a classroom and made contact with three students who appeared to be very lethargic. The School Administration and Deputy immediately escorted the students to the nurse’s station to be evaluated by the school medical staff. A short time later two additional students were escorted to the office because of similar behaviors and complaints of not feeling well. All of students were evaluated by the medical staff while waiting for Emergency Medical Services to arrive. It was determined that five High School students had intentionally ingested multiple prescription Xanax pills in which they are believed to have purchased from a student on campus. Jackson County and Marianna EMS/Fire personnel arrived on scene to evaluate the students each of which showed signs of slurred speech, trouble walking, standing or balancing, glossy eyes, delayed motor functions and struggled to communicate at a normal rate.

EMS personnel did transport all five of the students by ambulance to Jackson Hospital for treatment and observation. During the course of the investigation it was found that one of the students transported to the hospital for treatment did unlawfully distribute the prescription Xanax pills to the other students who later became ill. This student was taken into custody and charged with four counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. The student was medically cleared before being transported to the Florida Department Of Juvenile Justice Detention facility where they are being held. At this time, the name of the student is being withheld due to their age.

Sheriff Lou Roberts and his staff would like to thank Jackson County Fire and Rescue, Marianna Fire and Rescue, the Jackson County School Board and Jackson Hospital for their assistance with this matter. Sheriff Roberts would also ask that anyone who has any information regarding the distribution of any illegal drugs or substances to any student at any of our schools to please notify their School Resource Deputy, calling the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers at 850-526 -5000.
