BALDWIN COUNTY, AL (WALA) - Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack said the man who fired shots at deputies Monday is dead.
The incident started around 1:30 p.m. at a mobile home park on Highway 98 near Keller Road in Barnwell. Mack said two deputies were there to serve an eviction notice when a man inside the home fired shots at them.
The deputies returned fire and were able to escape without injury. The suspect then barricaded himself in the home for the next five hours.
During the standoff, deputies attempted to contact the man several times in an attempted to get him to surrender. Mack said the suspect refused to give up.
Around 6:30 p.m., Mack said the SWAT team went into the home to get the man out. Mack said the suspect then fired more shots, hitting the protective equipment of the law enforcement officers. The sheriff said his deputies were not hurt thanks to the ballistic vests and shields.
