DOTHAN - HOUSTON COUNTY: On Friday evening there was a motor vehicle accident on Highway 84 West and Woodburn Drive at the entrance to Flowers Hospital Emergency Department.
The accident claimed the life of a well respected person in the Dothan area.
Houston County Sheriff Deputy Grantham was across the street at the Sonic Drive In when the accident occurred. Deputy Grantham was the first emergency responder on the scene.
Deputy Grantham had to cut the seat belt from the lady. He identified himself as a Deputy Sheriff. The lady is reported to have told Deputy Grantham to please not leave her. She also asked him to call Sheriff Valenza because she knew the Sheriff.
Before the scene was cleared or near being cleared, Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza and his wife, Margaret, arrived at Flowers Hospital.
This lovely ladies husband's life was claimed at impact. Her two son's were in Birmingham. They did not want to tell the son's of their dad's death until they arrived in Dothan.
RSN listed the accident as "Serious" and transported to Flowers Hospital. No scene pictures or mention of fatality. It was not until Saturday that we amended the article of a fatality or any scene pictures, and after which we made sure the son's were here and knew.
But the purpose of this article is to speak about Houston County Sheriff Deputy Jason Grantham, Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza and Mrs. Houston County Sheriff Margaret Valenza ( no, she does not work for the Sheriff Department but the Sheriff's wife ).
They did not leave this lovely lady. They remained with her at the hospital until her son's arrived from Birmingham. Sheriff Valenza, personally, delivered the message to the young men outside the presence of their mom about their dad.
But this lovely lady asked Deputy Grantham to please do not leave her. He did not. And Sheriff and Mrs. Valenza responded and remained by her.
They have a calling to serve and protect. I am not trying to bolster any of them or sensationalize any part of this tragedy. But if you are not told of the caliber, dedication and devotion these people ( and others do ) have you would never know.
And this is what makes us #houstoncountystrong.
