Don't underestimate what happened in Birmingham this week.
Arcadis - the engineering giant formerly known as Malcolm Pirnie - summarily fired Jerry Jones, its vice president in Birmingham.
It terminated the guy who got things done. It fired the rainmaker, the man who cultivated the Birmingham Water Works as a cash cow, a multi-million dollar engineering boon.
Don't underestimate what it means. Don't for a minute think the company, which has made millions from the water works for the decade-plus Jones has been working for the company in Birmingham, would do it lightly.
Arcadis, in a statement from spokesman Brad Jones, said the company learned that a single employee violated company policies and "immediately launched a very thorough internal investigation into the matter. In addition, it fully cooperated with state and federal authorities."
It then fired Jones.
