DOTHAN, AL, July 16, 2017 – During Greater Beulah Baptist Church’s morning worship service yesterday, five Wiregrass students were awarded scholarships from the first annual S.A. Cherry Scholarship Fund. Pastor Ray Malone, Karen Solomon of the scholarship committee, and Cherry & Irwin’s Partners—Sam Cherry and Ben Irwin—gathered to present the awards to the winners. The recipients of the scholarships are as follows:

Nicholas Mcleod

Destin Henderson

Trajan Baily

Chasity Cooper

Angelica Hollis

The S.A. Cherry Scholarship Fund was created in memory of Sam Cherry’s father, S.A. Cherry, in partnership with Pastor Ray Malone and will annually award five $1,000.00 scholarships to Wiregrass students. The scholarship fund was put in place to reward local hardworking students in their quest of furthering their education, who possess the need for financial assistance.

Each nominated candidate submitted an essay detailing why they felt they deserved to be selected to receive the award.  The winning recipients of the scholarships were selected by a committee consisting of members of the Greater Beulah Baptist Church’s congregation and the Partners of Cherry & Irwin.

Founding Partner of Cherry & Irwin, Sam Cherry said about his father, S.A., “From a young age, my father engrained in me the lessons of hard work and not to judge those less fortunate without walking in their shoes. These bright and talented young students have the knowledge and skills to be successful, but they don’t have the means necessary to help them achieve their goals.”

Mr. S.A. Cherry was a prominent member in our Wiregrass area, and he was known throughout the community for his generosity and willingness to help those in need.  S.A. owned Cherry’s Super Foods grocery store in the Dixie community for decades. As a product of the Depression, he never turned away anyone that showed up at his store suffering from hunger.  S.A. also served as a Dothan City Commissioner for over ten years. As a commissioner, S.A. advocated for members of the community that were often overlooked and felt like they had no voice.

Sam Cherry also stated, “We wish all of the recipients of this year’s scholarships every success in their future pursuits. Cherry & Irwin is tremendously proud to be a part of this project and look forward to learning more about next year’s candidates and helping them follow their dreams.”
