Traffic Stop Lands a Mississippi Man in Jail

On October 29, 2018 a Deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office conducted a probable cause traffic stop for a safety belt violation. The vehicle came to a stop at the Alford gas station located on Highway 231.

Upon making contact with the driver he was informed for the reason of the stop. The driver provided information, about his identity, to the Deputy and after doing so began to show signs of being visibly nervous and excessively perspire. The driver informed the Deputy on his own volition his license was expired and there was a firearm within the vehicle.  The driver was asked to step out of the vehicle for safety purposes. The firearm was later retrieved and was located between the driver’s seat and the center console.

As the Deputy relayed the driver’s information to dispatch the he advised he was in the area assisting with relief efforts and was not from the area. The driver of the vehicle, when asked by the Deputy, was unable to remember how to spell his last name and then advised his last name was another. While the Deputy was attempting to confirm the subject identity he was fidgeting around the front of the marked patrol vehicle. When the Deputy got a closer look he observed a clear bag had been placed in the opening of the patrol vehicle’s grill. The driver was detained and upon inspection the Deputy discovered a crystal like substance which was suspected to be methamphetamine and was field tested which yielded positive results as such.

The Deputy conducted a search of the vehicle and located a glass smoking pipe, with suspected methamphetamine residue, in the center console of the vehicle. The Deputy also found another firearm which was an AR-15 style rifle within the truck of the vehicle with a bunch of ammunition.

The driver was eventually identified as Gary Goss and was a resident of Mississippi. A computer check of Goss’ information returned he had an active warrant out of Mississippi for a parole violation. During the check it was also discovered Goss is a convicted felon out of Mississippi as well. Based on the investigation Goss was placed under arrest and transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance on his charges.

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia/Narcotic Equipment
Providing False Identification Information to Law Enforcement Officer
Resisting Arrest without Violence
