On July 11thth, 2017, a Deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with an expired registration at the intersection of Bumpnose Rd and Gilmore Rd.
The Deputy made contact with the driver, who was identified as Jeffrey J. Smith and passenger, James Fonsen. A check through the Florida Department of Driver and Motor Vehicle Database showed that Jeffrey J. Smith did not possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
During the course of the traffic stop, the Deputy deployed K9 Roxy to conduct a free air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle and gave a positive alert. During the probable cause search of the vehicle, 3 orange round tablets were found in a Yeti Tumbler and identified as Oxycontin. A cigarette box was located that contained two clear plastic jewelry bags with a crystal like substance that tested positive for Methamphetamine (approx 5g). Also located in the vehicle was a cut straw that contained suspected methamphetamine residue. Located under the center console of the vehicle was a silver screw top container that contained a crystal like residue which was determined to be methamphetamine.
Upon searching the contents within the rear passenger compartment of the vehicle, a green and white contact lens case was located containing a clear liquid. The liquid was field tested which did yield a positive result for methamphetamine (approx 5g).
Based upon the above information, Jeffrey J. Smith was placed under lawful arrest for Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of a Controlled Substance without a Prescription, Tampering with Evidence (Oxycontin placed in cup), and Driving while License Suspended and Revoked w/ knowledge (2nd offense). Mr. Smith was transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance and Mr. Fonsen was released from the scene.
