A traffic stop for an expired tag led to the arrest of two men on drug related charges Wednesday, March 21, 2018.

A Holmes County Sheriff’s Office deputy conducted the traffic stop near the intersection of Boswell Road and Bonifay Gritney Road. As the vehicle came to a stop, the deputy observed the front seat passenger moving around and leaning into the floorboard. The front passenger, identified as Joseph L. Goodman, 28, of Grand Ridge, straightened suddenly when the deputy approached the door, and the deputy asked him to exit the vehicle. Goodman admitted to the deputy the car’s occupants had “just smoked a little marijuana,” but stated he was uncertain if there was anything else in the vehicle.

After the other two occupants had also exited the vehicle, the deputy located a cut straw with white residue inside a wallet belonging to the backseat passenger, identified as Jerry R. Cone, 36, of Bonifay. After Cone was handcuffed, Goodman began moving around excessively and asked the deputy if he could go into the woods to use the bathroom. Goodman was then detained for the deputy’s safety.

The deputy began conducting a search of the vehicle with the driver’s permission and located a red box under the front passenger seat where Goodman had been sitting. The box contained two smoking pipes, digital scales, a metal can with a bag of methamphetamine inside it, another small bag containing methamphetamine, and another container with more methamphetamine inside of it.

Next, the deputy searched a backpack found in the backseat. Inside the backpack, which Cone stated belonged to him, the deputy discovered a small, metal container that held two shards of methamphetamine, a double-barrel smoking pipe, and three marijuana cigarettes.

Cone was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), and possession of marijuana less than 20 grams.

Goodman was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.
