Travel Trailer Fire Which Claimed the Lives of Two People

On September 3, 2017, investigators with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to 3614 Hwy 69 Greenwood, Florida, in reference to a travel trailer fire which claimed the lives of two people.
Family members who also lived on the property discovered the travel trailer had been burned at approximately 8:30 am on the 3rd, when they observed the back window had been busted and what appeared to be smut above the window. The family member attempted to pry the front door of the trailer open, but was unsuccessful so the family member busted out the west front window.
Shortly after investigators arrived the victims were identified Caroyln D. Melnik and Billy E. Sanders. Upon investigating the scene further it appeared that the fire started on the couch located just outside the bedroom where Melnik and Sanders’ bodies were found.
Melnik appeared to have been sleeping and was perhaps unaware that a fire has started. It appeared that Sanders was attempting to alert Melnik before his demise. Neither of Melnik’s or Sanders’ bodies was badly burned and it is possible that they died from smoke inhalation and no foul play is suspected.
The fire appeared to have been contained inside the travel trailer therefore, smoldering it’s self out instead of igniting further. However further investigation will be conducted by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
