PONCE DE LEON, Fla – Holmes County Sheriff’s Office reports more details in the April 2, 2018 drowning death of a Newton, Alabama man at Vortex Springs in Ponce de Leon.
Deputies arrived at 1517 Vortex Springs Lane at 11:23 Monday morning to find several divers administering CPR on the victim, 19-year-old Devon Deshawn Reynolds, who had been swimming at the springs.
EMS took over CPR after arriving on scene and would later pronounce Reynolds deceased.
Witnesses advised deputies that Reynolds was swimming with friends when he became frantic.
Reynolds’ friends attempted to help him; however, he went underwater before they could be successful.
Numerous divers were in the area at the time Reynolds went underwater and attempted to rescue him prior to the arrival of emergency responders by descending into the water in a human chain to form a search pattern.
After the divers located and retrieved Reynolds from the water, they administered oxygen and performed CPR until emergency responders arrived.
The investigation is ongoing and pending the results from the Medical Examiner’s Office.
