HENRY COUNTY: Henry County Sheriff Deputies and other agencies held a driver license check on Henry County Road 48 and County Road 97 last evening.
This driver license check was at Thomas Mill Creek at Baker's Landing.
Well, a driver apparently did not want to go through the license check. He stops at the bridge on County Road 48 and starts swimming. This was sometime around 11 PM.
Henry County called for Dale County Sheriff helicopter to respond to search for the suspect. Officers thought they heard the man groan and wanted to make sure that he was not injured.
It is not known why the person decided to flee by swimming. Some people just have an allergic reaction to blue light.
The person was not located.
UPDATED @ 10:01 PM
The suspect that jumped in the water left his girlfriend in the vehicle. Deputies were able to talk with the man as he swam away.
Some people who were on their docks let the deputies use their boat to look for the suspect. Alabama Game and Fish units also responded.
Multiple agencies stayed until 4 AM looking for the suspect and returned today continuing to look. The suspect has not returned home or been seen.
The deputies and other agencies last evening and throughout today quickly forgot he was a suspect that fled and quickly started a operation of a rescue of a person in trouble. That search has continued. Again the deputies are not as concerned that he ran but that he is safe and did not drown.
No law enforcement officer was "chasing" the suspect when he made th decision to jump in the water and begin swimming.
We do not have his name. But if anyone knows the person who ran and knows his whereabouts please call 334-585-3131 and let the Henry County Sheriff Department know.
