COWARTS:  12:48 PM.  Houston County sheriff Patrol Lt. James Ivey, Deputy Sheriff McKinney and others are on Jeater Street in Cowarts.


The deputies are in a stand off with a subject threatening suicide. Reports are the subject has a knife to his throat.


Lt. Ivey instructed Pilcher’s Ambulance to stand by in a safe zone. The scene is not cleared for EMS Safety at this time.

Houston County Sheriff Lt. Ivey called mutual aid assistance from Dothan Police hostage team. Before Dothan Police assembled Houston County Sheriff Deputies talked subject out and he is being treated.

Correction on calling for Dothan Police. It was not a hostage team. It was for non lethal weapon type assistance.


All ended well because of the experience of the supervisor and deputies of the Sheriff Department. A stressful situation handled professionally.


Deputies transported the distressed undividual to SAMC for medical intervention.
