ALABAMA:     The first full work week begins in the morning when the JUSTICE System opens at 8 AM.


JUSTICE means “just us”!


In Houston County, Houston County District Court Judge Benjamin Lewis kicks off the work week with a docket of pleas and arraignments. In looking at the docket no real serious cases. But about 12 pages.


Judge Lewis will begin at 8:30 AM with first appearances. From the Houston County Courthouse Judge Lewis will see persons in custody via TV from the Houston County Jail. At this appearance Judge Lewis will go over what they are charged with, the potential punishment, do they have a lawyer, if they do not do they plan to hire a lawyer. If they can not afford a lawyer Judge Lewis will ask a series of questions to determine if they qualify for a court appointed lawyer.


Following the first appearances Judge Lewis will then move into the docket of the arraignments and pleas.


Judge Moulton has what all Judges hate. Domestic Relations. Several divorces scheduled before Judge Moulton.


Marriage is often easy and simple to enter into and costly to exit from. And all Judges have heard how sorry the other person is and why you want to clean their clocks and divorce. All Judges hate divorce cases but the necessary evil that comes with a six figure salary and hefty retirement - for the Judge that is!


Judge Larry K. Anderson, the senior Judge and Presiding Judge of the 20th Judicial Circuit. At least until July and then the Honorable Todd Derrick will step up as Presiding Judge of the 20th Judicial Circuit.


Honorable District Court Judge Lori Collier Ingram has no printed docket. Judge Ingram is the lucky ( or unlucky ) one who gets to handle all of the Juvenile cases. In between Judge Ingram handles some small claims cases. The Juvenile cases are confidential so no printed dockets and only those on that particular case are allowed in the courtroom.


The Honorable Butch Binford and Todd Derrick had court last week. Their day will be spent reading files, motions, doing orders, and handling paperwork. Getting ready for court hearings. 


You know after a Judge hears all the stuff in court, there is the paperwork. Not the same as the bathroom paperwork, but often times resembles it!


Judge Mike Conaway. Well he was appointed by the Former Slime Ball Alabama Governor Bob Riley. ( Slime ball refers strictly to Riley, NOT Conaway.)


Conaway served the balance of Retired 20th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Lawson Little’s term when he retired. Riley appointed Mike Conaway who served the balance of Little’s term and then was elected to a full six year term.


Judge Conaway has passed the age of 70. Alabama law stops a person from seeking election as a Judge after the age of 70.


On January 15 Judge Conaway will be officially retired from Judgeship. The Honorable John John Steensland will take the Oath of Office and begin his tenure as Circuit Court Judge for the 20th Judicial Circuit on the 15th.


Judge COnaway has some docket items scheduled this week. But most of his time will most likely be spent winding down and preparing to close out his tenure as a Circuit Court Judge for the 20th Judicial Circuit.


While Larry K. Anderson is the ”Senior Judge” in years of service, 22 years, Conaway is the senior Judge in age. The baby Judge in age, I guess will be Steensland.


We wish Judge Conaway well as he retires. He has served well. 


IN HENRY COUNTY - 20TH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT



In Henry County, the Honorable Derek Peterson will hit the ground running with court.


Judge Peterson is the Henry County District Court Judge. Sometimes he has to sit in as Acting Circuit Court Judge.


Judge Peterson has three dockets scheduled tomorrow. The Judge will hear District Criminal matters, domestic relations matters ( again those every Judge hates ) and traffic cases. 


Judge Peterson will also see anyone in custody that will require an initial appearance.


COURTWATCH...we will be watching and listening.
