BLOUNTSVILLE ( SULLIVAN CO ) TN: A suspect is dead and a Deputy Sheriff fighting for his life in Sullivan County ( Blountsville TN ) following a Saturday morning incident.
Sullivan County Sheriff Deputy Steve Hinkle was responding to a welfare check on Saturday morning.
As the Sheriff Deputies approached the house it is reported that 44 year old Jackie Scott Pendergrass fired a shot at deputies as they approached the house.
The deputies retreated and attempted to talk to the suspect. He then opened fire on the deputies and struck Deputy Hinkle.
Hinkle was transported to the hospital. The suspect barricaded himself in the house for several hours. Law Enforcement finally breached the house to find the suspect dead of a gunshot wound.
Deputy Hinkle started as a Corrections Officer in Sullivan County in 1986. He went to police academy in 1987. He served in several areas of the department to include School Resource Officer. Recently Deputy Hinkle was assigned to patrol division.
The community embraced one another Sunday evening coming together to lift Deputy Hinkle up in prayer.
Pastor Burton is quoted as saying " there's just some things that medicine can't do and only God can do and so if they can just keep him going, that's all we can ask and ask for HIS mercy".
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the Saturday morning shooting.
