The West Virginia House of Delegates voted to impeach all four state Supreme Court justices over claims of excessive spending.
Charges against Justices Allen Loughry, Margaret Workman, Robin Davis and Elizabeth Walker were sent to the Senate for a hearing on Monday, the West Virginia Gazette Mail reported. Davis announced her immediate retirement Tuesday morning, removing her from impeachment proceedings which are expected to continue against the other three justices.
The court's fifth member, Justice Menis Kethum, resigned in July and has agreed to a plea deal related to wire fraud.
The charges related to claims the justices abused public vehicles and credit cards, racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars in bills related to renovating their chambers. Davis along spent more than $500,000 on office renovations, including one rug that cost $20,500. Loughry spent $363,000 - $31,924 on one sofa - and faces additional charges after being indicated by a federal grand jury in June on 22 counts of fraud, making false statements to the FBI and witness tampering.
