DOTHAN, Ala. (May 11, 2017) — Westside Terrace Healthcare is joining long-term care facilities around the nation to highlight America’s spirit and commitment to service during National Nursing Home Week (NNHW). Held May 14 -20, this year’s national observance’s theme, “The Spirit of America”, highlights the bond among staff, volunteers and residents that captures the American spirit. Westside will mark the week with a series of events that recognize acts of kindness, generosity, and compassion that improve the quality of life for residents.

Established by the American Health Care Association in 1967, the week provides an opportunity for residents and their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and surrounding communities to acknowledge the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities.

“Nursing homes are an important part of our community and it takes the help of so many people to make sure that our residents are not only cared for, but made to feel important,” said Kristie Hughes, Westside Healthcare administrator. “We just want to show our deep appreciation to our staff, volunteers and our nation.”

Westside will kick off the week with a big show of patriotism for its American Spirit Day to be held May 15 at 10 a.m. Residents and staff will unfurl a massive American flag on the west lawn area and sing patriotic songs. Later at 2 p.m., residents and staff will have a scavenger hunt for treasures and prizes. Families and friends are welcome to join the day’s events.

“Our residents are part of America’s rich tapestry because their lives and contributions make up our history,” Hughes said. “We are so grateful that they are still giving back to us all by sharing their stories and wisdom.”
