Atlanta, GA - In the late evening of Monday, June 11th, and after a busy day that consisted of a 2-alarm fire and numerous medical calls, Engine 12 and Truck 12 (C-shift) responded to a single family residence for a report of a fire. Once enroute, the call was updated to include possible entrapment of a non-ambulatory elderly woman.
On arrival, Truck 12 confirmed that they had a working fire in the basement of the home and a report of one person still inside. A walk around of the home identified one person who was able to escape to the driveway suffering from smoke inhalation. Heavy smoke was pushing from the basement.
As Engine 12 was putting hose lines in place and establishing a positive water supply, Truck 12 made the critical and life-saving decision to make entry and begin a primary search in near black-out smoke conditions.
An elderly female was discovered motionless on the floor in a bedroom. She was removed and taken up to street level where Atlanta Fire paramedics began treating her for smoke inhalation. She was breathing on her own and talking with firefighters before being transported.
Minutes count in this industry. The courage that is displayed by our members on a daily basis here at AFRD does not go unnoticed. #AFRDSTRONG
