Now that a Morgan County judge ruled Alabama's teacher-student sex law unconstitutional, the issue likely is headed to the Court of Criminal Appeals for an opinion that will have statewide influence.
Several teachers and other school workers across the state have been charged under a 2010 law that makes illegal any sexual contact with any students who are younger than 19. But, since Morgan County Circuit Judge Glenn Thompson ruled Thursday that the law is unconstitutionally broad in the cases of two local teachers, even cases in other counties likely will be put on hold pending the outcome of an appeal.
