HARTFORD, Alabama — Wiregrass Electric Cooperative sent crew members on Sept. 16 to Lumbee River EMC in North Carolina to assist with electric restoration following Hurricane Florence.

“We send crews to help out our neighboring states whenever there is a storm or other disaster,” said Brad Kimbro, WEC Chief Operating Officer. “More than 150 linemen from Alabama’s electric cooperatives have gone or are in the process of going to the Carolinas.  We have 13 men going and we are committed to help them get their system back to normal as quickly and safely as possible. We have some great lineman, that are well trained and know what they are doing.  They will do a great job helping our North Carolina cooperative friends get their members electricity restored. This is one of our basic cooperative principles in action — neighbor helping neighbor. We know that they would return the favor if disaster were to strike our area.”

Lumbee River EMC serves more than 52,000 members in Cumberland, Hoke, Robeson and Scotland counties with over 77,000 power poles, spanning more than 5,600 miles across eastern North Carolina.

Electric cooperatives affected by the storm have called on crews from across the country to assist in restoring electric service. The Alabama Rural Electric Association (AREA) coordinated assistance from the 20 electric cooperatives in Alabama.
