Thirty-five percent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. This month and next the Zonta Club of Dothan commemorates the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence— an international campaign that aims to inspire action and end violence against women and girls around the world.

“Violence against women is not just a women’s issue,” says Zonta International President Sonja Hönig Schough. “It is a worldwide pandemic that crosses every social and economic class, every religion, race and ethnicity.”

At the local level, Zonta clubs across the world have organized activities and events as part of the Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign, which focuses on the service and advocacy actions of Zonta clubs and districts to prevent and end violence against women and girls in their local communities. Each year during the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which runs from 25 November- 10 December, Zonta International encourages its clubs to participate in advocacy efforts that focus on prevention, protection and prosecution.

This year we will discuss the 2018 legislative session and what bills we will support to help women here in Alabama, as well as work to get local publicity about the issue of gender-based violence. Last month the Zonta Club of Dothan assisted the House of Ruth and the Exchange Center with their Domestic Violence Vigil and next month will volunteer at the House of Ruth holiday gift wrapping fundraiser.

According to Zonta Club of Dothan President Amanda Enfinger, "Gender-based violence is a big problem in the Wiregrass area. Our service partners working to address gender-based violence are spread very thin over several counties. Sadly there is still a lot of progress to be made here and around the world."

Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women began in November 2012. To learn more and join the campaign, please visit www.zontasaysno.com .Zonta International’s ongoing efforts to end violence against women and girls at the international level are carried out through the Zonta International Strategies to End Violence against Women (ZISVAW) program and through Zonta’s partnerships with the United Nations and its agencies. Since the program’s inception in 1999, more than $5.5 million has been provided to support projects to prevent and end violence against women and girls in 42 countries. The Zonta Club of Dothan has donated thousands of dollars each year to ZISVAW and our local service partners who assist women facing violence.

Founded in 1919, Zonta International is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to empower women worldwide through service and advocacy. With more than 29,000 members belonging to nearly 1,200 clubs in 66 countries, Zontians all over the world volunteer their time, talent and support to local and international service projects and educational programs. The Zonta Club of Dothan meets regularly, providing friendship and service opportunities to executives and professionals in the Wiregrass. We organize the annual International Food Festival- next one March 10th, 2018, at the Peanut Festival. Contact Angie McKinney at 334-714-8958 to attend one of our meetings.
