MIDLAND CITY: 8:02 PM Ozark - Dale County 911 Center dispatched Echo Rescue to a medical emergency in Midland City. The medical emergency was a possible stroke patient. Ozark - Dale County 911 reported they were launching LifeFlight Helicopter
Only one member of Echo Rescue answered and he responded on his personal vehicle and not the ambulance since he was the only one who answered. Ozark - Dale County 911 then dispatched Ozark Fire EMS to respond to Midland City.
Lifeflight was 4 minutes out from landing at the Dale County High School. Midland City Police were on the scene with their emergency lights on for a point of reference in order to land.
Echo Rescue member notified LifeFlight they did not have to land that Ozark Fire EMS advised they would ground transport the patient rather than air transport. Lifeflight did not land and returned to headquarters.
Ambulance service in the south end of Dale County, well let's just say, it is best not to get into a accident or sick if you are in the south end of Dale County.
Midland City Rescue rarely has a crew. Echo Rescue sometimes has a crew. Wicksburg Rescue always has a crew and covers Pinckard - some of Newton - sometimes Daleville as well as their Houston County territory.
Ozark Fire EMS is super and will come into the county if all of their ambulances are not busy. But their first priority is the City of Ozark of which they always have to have a ambulance ready. Dale County Rescue has opened and hit and miss on calls.
Pilcher's at one time was covering the south end of Dale County but the Mayors of Pinckard, Midland City and Newton along with Dale County Commission could never come to an agreement. Midland City bought a new ambulance but the majority of the time do not run that ambulance.
The Midland City Council thought they were being generous at the last meeting I attended. They would pay the EMT $ 25 a run. The last time I checked there were no hospitals in Midland City, so all patients had to transport to (1) Dale Medical Center in Ozark, (2) Flowers Hospital on Highway 84 West in Dothan, or (3) Southeast Alabama Medical Center AKA Southeast Health if they are not on diversion. So would you got to school and get trained to be a medic and do it for $ 25?
Ozark - Dale County 911 literally pull their hair out often times attempting to get a ambulance to respond. They have had Abbeville Rescue dispatched to Midland City and even Ashford Rescue dispatched to Midland City.
So the next time you travel from Dothan NORTH - hope you do not have a accident or get sick until you get to Ozark. If you do then Woodie might be looking at you but you not looking back. Oh,, Woodie is the Dale County Coroner!
BTW - in no wy am I making light of the medical emergency tonight. What I am trying to do is point out FACT to you of which is reality. Hopefully some so called leaders will do something.
Dale County Commission Chairman Mark Blakenship and the Dale County Commission realize this is an issue. That is why they passed the $ 5.00 fee on your license plates for EMS. But that passed this past November and it will be a year before any money turns and will take several years before any significant money is turned. But this is a beginning.
