HOUSTON COUNTY: Great news for him and his family, but awful news for the citizens and guests of Houston County.
Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes is announcing today that he has been appointed as Assistant Director for Homeland Security with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
This appointment is by Spencer Collier, Alabama Secretary of Law Enforcement.
Sheriff Hughes will be Sheriff through August 18 th.
This appointment is one of a lifetime for Sheriff Hughes and his family. He will command statewide. Collier has recognized the talent of Hughes and how Alabama will benefit from his talent.
While the state is getting benefits, Hughes has done an outstanding job as Sheriff of Houston County. He has shown dedication and leadership for the department and brought the Sheriff Department into the future.
WHAT NOW?
Alabama Governor Robert Bentley will make an appointment for Sheriff of Houston County. Whoever is appointed will serve as Sheriff until January when the newly elected Sheriff will take office.
However, Andy Hughes is the only person who has qualified for election as Sheriff. The time period has expired for anyone to qualify. Hughes qualified as a Republican and no Democrat qualified for office. The time to qualify as an independent has expired.
The Houston County Executive Committee for the Republican Party will make an appointment of someone to run for Sheriff in Hughes place. And that person will have no opposition.
I am contacting the Alabama Secretary of State to seek answers. The primary run off election date was yesterday. That means all primaries are closed.
And as of this writing, what I have written is all I know.
