Detectives with the DeFuniak Springs Police Department traveled to Orlando on Tuesday to deliver a trailer full of surplus items for final delivery to Puerto Rico.  “With the recent devastation that Puerto Rico has faced, I wanted to team up with Orlando Police Department., who volunteered to ship the items, in order to aid their law enforcement agencies.

We had numerous items that we could no longer use and that would obtain a minimal
return if sold.  To an agency in need, the equipment is invaluable,” said Chief Mark Weeks.  Upon arrival at Orlando P.D., Detectives were met by Orlando personnel who assisted in unloading the surplus items.  Once all the items are collected from various other agencies, Orlando P.D. will ship them in a cargo container to Puerto Rico.

Deputy Chief Orlando Rolon with Orlando Police Department initiated the effort after Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico.  So much of the landscape and vital equipment was destroyed that Deputy Chief Rolon wanted to coordinate an effort to help the U.S. Territory revive. “It’s good to know that fellow law enforcement agencies will help each other out when disaster strikes,” said Chief Weeks.
