Birmingham Alabama is in Jefferson County, NOT, Jefferson County in Birmingham. For a long period of time I have called out Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale over the murder rate in Birmingham. Reminding him that HE was the ultimate person responsible because as Sheriff he was the Chief Law Enforcement for Jefferson County. If the murder rate was not getting under control, it was Sheriff Mike Hale’s responsibility to step up and get it under control.

Not in anyway taking credit. But Sheriff Mike Hale had a focus on bingo and not crime ( Steve Marshall take note ).

The Sheriff is the Chief Law Enforcement of the county. If the Chief of Police is not getting it done it is ultimately your responsibility. You are accountable.

JEFFERSON COUNTY ( BIRMINGHAM ):   Mark Pettway knows his defeat of Mike Hale was historic.

He was an underdog, defeating a five-term fixture in Jefferson County law enforcement.

He’s Jefferson County’s first black sheriff, in spitting distance from the cell where Martin Luther King Jr. was held for marching without a permit.

But he predicts his tenure will be historic for another reason. “I will be the Nick Saban of the sheriff’s office,’’ Pettway said. “I will be the best coach this office has seen.”

The 54-year-old Pettway, who by the way is a UAB Blazers fan, stopped Hale’s bid to win a sixth term with 51.4 percent to Hale’s 48.54 percent. Though local media referred to Pettway’s win as a “stunner,” the longtime sheriff’s detective sergeant said he wasn’t stunned at all.
