On Tuesday January 15, 2019, Deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Goodwill Store located at 2800 Hwy 71 in Marianna, Florida in reference to a Shoplifting complaint. It was reported to responding Deputies that the suspect was observed walking around the store concealing items on her person.

Upon arrival, Deputies made contact with an individual matching the description of the suspect provided by employees of the business. The suspect was subsequently identified as Wanda Lee Mercer of Greenwood, Florida. While making contact with Mercer, the Deputy observed several items fall from her person that were consistent with the use and possession of illegal narcotics. These items were later determined to be methamphetamine and aluminum foil boats used to smoke methamphetamine.

Before transporting Mercer to the Jail, the Deputy field tested the suspected methamphetamine per Jackson County Sheriff’s Office policy. The Deputy immediately began to have a physical reaction to the substance that would mirror an exposure to Fentanyl. Before losing consciousness, the Deputy was able to radio that he needed medical attention due to a possible Fentanyl exposure. Additional Deputies were in the area at the time of the radio transmission and arrived to assist. The injured Deputy was administered a dose of NARCAN to counteract the affects of the potential Fentanyl exposure. The Deputy was later transported to the Jackson Hospital where he remains for observation.

Mercer was transported to the Jackson County Jail to await first appearance. During the booking process, an additional baggie containing a controlled substance later identified as Xanax was seized from Mercer. The suspected Methamphetamine and Fentanyl was secured and removed by the Jackson County Sheriffs Office’s Narcotics Division. Further charges are pending.

Sheriff Roberts encourages the reporting of any and all suspicious activity and information by calling the Jackson County Sheriff's Office at 850-482-9624 or Chipola Crime Stoppers at 850-526-5000.
