Influenza, often called the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus that affects the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. Experts believe that the virus spreads through tiny droplets made when those who are sick cough, sneeze or talk. The flu differs from a common cold in that it comes on suddenly. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older receive the annual influenza vaccine. Once you receive your flu shot, protection kicks in about 2 weeks after. The severity of the illness can vary, while severe cases can result in hospitalization or death. Older people, young children, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for flu complications. Those with the flu are most contagious in the first 3-4 days after the illness begins. Symptoms of the flu include: fever over 100.4 F, aching muscles, chills, sweats, headaches, dry cough, fatigue, weakness, nasal congestion, and sore throat. Some flu complications include pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma flare-ups, heart problems, and ear infections.

While flu can be detected year-round in the United States, most cases occur during fall or winter. Flu activity often begins to increase in October with peaks happening between December and February. Usually plenty of rest and fluids will treat the virus, but in some cases your doctor might prescribe you antiviral medication like Tamiflu. In the United States, over 200,000 people each year are hospitalized from flu complications and about 36,000 people die as a result. The majority of deaths occur among people over the age of 65. It is important to receive your flu shot before the peak season to allow it to start taking effect. Come see us today at Alabama Clinics to receive your flu shot. Walk-ins are welcome!
