TUSCALOOSA BUT HE IS FROM OZARK: Alabama’s Head Football Coach Nick Saban hired Charles Kelly from University of Tennessee to join his coaching staff.
While Kelly was coaching at Tennessee, Charles Kelly was raised in Ozark Alabama. He was a stand out during his high school days at G.W. Long in Dale County’s area of Skipperville.
Charles Kelly’s dad, Lavon Kelly has coached several places in this wiregrass. His dad is a member of the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame. His dad, Lavon Kelly, coached at Houston Academy during my high school days.
The Ozark, Ala., native played defensive back at Auburn from 1986-89. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Central High School in Tuscaloosa, Ala., before spending the 1993 season as an assistant at his alma mater.
From there, Kelly spent the next five years at Jacksonville State, spending time on both sides of the ball while coaching running backs (1994), defensive backs (1995), as well as serving as the offensive coordinator (1996) and defensive coordinator (1997-98). He also has experience as a defensive coordinator at Nicholls State and Eufaula (Ala.) High School.
Congratulations to Ozark - Dale County Alabama. The young man who grew up in Ozark, and his parents are from Ozark. His dad still lives there and his mom passed away several years ago. Charles is now one of the Coaches at the University of Alabama.
Charles brother, John, is at G.W. Long in Skipperville.
