DOTHAN: Michael J. Ramsey, MD, FAAP, pediatrician and shareholder at Dothan Pediatric Healthcare Network was presented with the Marsha Raulerson Advocacy Award on September 23 for his steadfast service to children beyond the usual scope of practice through strong and faithful dedication to better policies for improved child health at the local, state, and national levels.
Created in 2011, the award is named in honor of Marsha Raulerson, MD, FAAP, of Brewton, AL, who has worked tirelessly for children in Alabama during her more than 30 years of practicing community pediatrics through consistent and effective advocacy for children’s programs and policies at the local, state, and national levels.
Nominations are accepted for members in good standing with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and its Alabama chapter. The recipient must also be involved in chapter activities for at least five years, demonstrate passion and efficacy for child advocacy issues, and encourage advocacy development within the AAP.
“I can think of no other chapter member who has, in recent years, demonstrated a spirit of advocacy for the children of Alabama,” states outgoing president of the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Cathy Wood, MD, FAAP. “In addition to creating the Choose to Have a Healthy Family, Alabama! Campaign, which resulted in pediatricians across the state using social media to educate parents, Dr. Ramsey continues to use video technology and social media even today in his own practice to educate parents about child health issues. Dr. Ramsey went above and beyond by staging a massive public relations and advocacy campaign in 2012, 2015 and 2016 to avert disaster in Alabama’s state funding for Medicaid. He was truly the leader in our state, writing letters to the editor, using social media to spread the word, conducting massive letter writing campaigns, hosting news conferences, and engaging in countless media interviews on the topic.”
Caring for the healthcare needs of children in the Wiregrass region has been the mission of Dothan Pediatric Clinic since being founded in 1953 by Dr. William Lies, III.
