On February 15th 149 student anglers from 36 high schools around the state of Alabama competed in the first championship qualification tournament of the 2014 season. Teams traveled from as far away as Ider, Hoover and Tuscaloosa County to local teams including Eufaula, Beulah and Auburn. These young men and women were competing not only for trophies and awards but also for qualification for the state tournament to be held in May where they will compete for thousands in scholarship money. To qualify for the championship tournament each school was assigned three qualification tournaments that will take place between February and May at various lakes around Alabama. Each school may enter up to five boats of two anglers into each of their three qualification tournaments. At the end of the day the top three boats for each team are scored and combined for a team score. The team (school) must finish in the top seven at one of their qualification tournaments to qualify for the championship to be held on Lake Neely Henry on May 9th and 10th. Eufaula High entered five boats into this first round qualification tournament on Saturday. Eufaula’s team of Cassandra Gifford and Andy Moore placed 14th in the field of 149 boats giving Eufaula valuable points in the teams overall standings. Anglers Dylan Pugh and Moran Parmer along with Jesse Osbon and JC Hall also brought fish to the scales adding to Eufaula’s team score. After final scoring Eufaula finished 6th as a team, giving them the points needed to qualify for the state championship in their first ASABFA tournament. Hayden high school won the tournament with an impressive twenty pound bag. Wetumpka High school took second with Chelsea high placing third, Dadeville placing forth, Alabama Christian Academy fifth, and Pell City finishing out the top seven teams that qualified for the state championship. The next ASABFA qualification tournament for Eufaula will be on Lake Martin on March 1st and their third will be on Lake Guntersville on March 15th. Though they have qualified for the championship they will still be competing for team points in the team of the year standings and individual anglers will be competing for anglers of the year awards. The Eufaula High Bass team would like to thank all our local sponsors for their support and donations. Without your assistance and dedication to our youth they would be not be able to take advantage of these opportunities.
