What do you get when you stick a pig in lederhosen and an alpine hat, give him a beer and bring him to Dothan to be the mascot for a fall barbecue festival? You either get a cranky pig or you get the fictional mascot for PorktoberQue.

PorktoberQue marries together the traditional aspects of Oktoberfest (music, beer and shopping) with a traditional southern past time, professional competition barbecue. Together it will create one of our area’s most unique festivals, scheduled for October 5-6 at the Houston County Farm Center in Dothan. The best part of this two day festival? It’s free for people to come out and attend!

The professional barbecue competition, sanctioned by the world renowned Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS), will feature cook teams from the southeast battling for $5,000.00 in prize money. Though professionally certified judges score their entries for the prize money, spectators will have a chance to vote for their favorites in the People’s Choice Tasting Tent.

There will also be barbecue vendors selling plates and other festival foods for sale at the event as well. Gates are open Friday October 5th from 5-9pm and Saturday October 6th from 10am- 10pm.  Besides the great barbecue and many vendors, there will be live entertainment both Friday and Saturday, featuring several bands from Alabama, Florida and Georgia. There will be a variety of music to include German Polkas (the Polka DOTs), children’s music led by Kimberly Graham,  humorous redneck parodies by “Hick Hop” artists Big Jimmy and Cracker Jack, contemporary rock by “THE ECHO”, country rock by Southern Chain Gang, and a whole lot more. (The entertainment line up is still being confirmed, so visit www.PorktoberQue.com for up to the minute details.)
With a little something for everyone, from face painting, games and crafts for the kids, to the Yuengling Biergarten, there will be tons of free family fun at the Farm Center the first weekend in October. Five Star Credit Union has sponsored a tent area with tables and chairs so you can have a place to enjoy your food and drinks at the “Five Star Festhaus”. Plus don’t miss cooking demonstrations, activities by our featured sponsors, and lots of great entertainment at this free admission event.

The vendor area is almost full, but a couple of spaces are still available if you would like to sell a product or promote your business. To find out more about being a vendor or sponsor, please call festival organizers, The Main Event at (334) 699-1475.
