A. L “Smoky” Brabham, 88, passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2017, in her home in Madison, Mississippi. She was born in Samson, Alabama on May 15, 1929. She was married for 56 years to John Brabham until his death in October 2006.

Smoky was a devoted wife and mother of five children. She had an unmatched dedication to her family, always putting others above herself. She had a passion for golf, even scoring the family record for hitting several hole-in-ones in her life. Friends and family described Smoky as a “character” known for her hilarious jokes, great sense of humor and infectious positivity. She had a vast love of literature that has carried through Smoky’s children and grandchildren. She would read story after story to her grandchildren in her unique accent, untraceable to a certain region. Her intellect was not only highlighted in her wit and literary sense, but also in her love of games, crossword puzzles and cards, for which she was usually the champion. Her legacy will also live on through the recipes she made famous through her fantastic cooking.

She is survived by her son John Brabham, Jr. and his wife Carmella; her daughter Jan Brabham Holcombe and her husband Don; daughter Jill Brabham Landrum and her husband David; daughter Katy Brabham Burgess and her husband Ricky; daughter-in-law, Natalya Brabham; grandchildren Jason Brabham, Trey Brabham, Joshua Brabham, Bobby Brabham, Tommy Landrum, Lauren Bowie, Heather Wolfe, Haley Holcombe, Chase Burgess and many beloved great-grandchildren, cousins and nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister Polly Stokes of Chancellor, Alabama.

She is preceded in death by her husband John Brabham, son Charles Robert Brabham, grandsons Heath Holcombe, Cory Burgess and great-grandson Wills Bowie. Her brother Robert Stafford fought in WWII and gave his life for our country at Normandy.

Her family would also like to thank her many caregivers, particularly Bridget Keys, for the incredible care through the last years of her life.

Services will be held Saturday, August 26th at College Avenue Church of Christ in Enterprise, Alabama with Pastor Keith Ellis officiating and Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m., service at 11:00 and internment will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
