NEWVILLE. . .Agnes Shelley Kirkland, a resident of Newville, died early Friday morning, December 1, 2017, in the Extendicare Health & Rehabilitation Center in Dothan. She was 96.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, December 3, 2017, in the Newville Baptist Church with Reverend Norman C. Simmons and Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. officiating and a eulogy to be given by Harold Parrish. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Newville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 13, Newville, AL 36353.
Mrs. Kirkland was born in Tumbleton and moved to Newville with her family as a child. She was a member of the Newville Baptist Church where she formerly taught Sunday School and the G.A.’s and also was a member of the W.M.U. and the church choir. Mrs. Kirkland was preceded in death by her father, Joel Shelley, her mother, Jewell Bond Shelley Hicks, her husband, Oren Kirkland, two daughters, Kathy Ostermeyer and Deanna Ammons, three sisters, Vivian Wright, Clogene Sprouse and Joan Woodham, and sons-in-law, Mac Ammons and Gary Whiddon. She was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Kirkland loved her family very much and was happiest when her family was all together.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Elaine Whiddon, Headland; and Barbara Kirkland, Dothan; three sisters, Frances Givens, Headland; Betty Kirkland, Newville; and Yvenette Parrish (Harold), Birmingham; a brother, Jay Shelley, Trussville, AL; a brother-in-law, Curtis Sprouse, Dothan; ten grandchildren, Tommy Ammons (Jennifer), Pam Ammons, Lori Brady (Tim), Alicia Cheshier (Jack), Steve Whiddon, Stanley Whiddon (Barbara), Penny Johnson (Ricky), Candice Pilcher (Martin), Michael Roland (Kim) and Michael Alan Ostermeyer; twenty-five great-grandchildren, twelve great-greatgrandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the nurses and CNA’s on Hall 6 of Extendicare and Kindred Hospice for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Kirkland and her family.
Serving as active pallbearers will be the grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
