Betty Hornsby, a resident of Dothan, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at a hospital in Fairhope, Alabama. She was 86.


Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 2 pm in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Hayes McKay and Rev. Kyle Gatlin officiating. Burial will follow in New Brockton City Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for 1 hour prior to the service.


Mrs. Hornsby was born on July 12, 1931 in New Brockton, Alabama and grew up there. She was the valedictorian of the 1949 class at New Brockton High School. Following her high school graduation, she moved to Montgomery and worked with the Alabama Department of Public Health. After moving back to New Brockton, she worked with the ASCS office. Betty married William Allen Hornsby in 1952 and they moved to Mobile. They moved to Dothan in 1961. After raising her children, she returned to work at the Houston County ASCS office. Mr. and Mrs. Hornsby relocated to Montgomery in 1983 when he was appointed Adjutant General and returned to Dothan in 1987. She was an avid reader and loved making collages and painting with watercolors. She also enjoyed fishing and spending time at Lake Eufaula. Mrs. Hornsby was the first woman appointed to the City of Dothan Recreation Board. She was a former member of Cloverdale United Methodist Church and a current member of Covenant United Methodist Church. She was an active member and officer for years in the United Methodist Women.


She was preceded in death by her husband, William Allen Hornsby; an infant son, William Allen Hornsby, Jr; and a brother Lewey Stephens.


Survivors include her children, Dr. Lynn Hornsby-Lewis (Ray) of Dallas, TX, Brock Hornsby (Fran) of Hoover, AL and Will Hornsby (Donna) of Daphne, AL; her grandchildren, Brock Lewis of Dallas, TX, Hunter Lewis of Brooklyn, NY, Maegan Hornsby of Hartselle, AL, Erin Hornsby of Birmingham, AL and McKenna Hornsby of Daphne, AL; her sister, Gloria Gannon of Flower Mound, TX; her brother-in-law, Arthur (Keum Sun) Hornsby of New Brockton, AL; her sisters-in-law, Mary Esther Hornsby of New Brockton, AL, Betty T. Hornsby of Dothan, AL and Faye Hornsby of Troy, AL; and many nieces and nephews.


The family would like to express a very special thank you to her friends, nieces and nephews for their love and support.
