ABBEVILLE. . .Carlton Edwin “Carl” Herndon, a resident of Abbeville, died early Wednesday morning, January 3, 2018, in a Dothan hospital. He was 75.


            Memorial services, with military honors, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 8, 2018, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Reverend John M. Raburn officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Monday at the mortuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.


            Carl Herndon was born in Midland City, Alabama and was reared in Frostproof, Florida, son of the late Connie Herndon and Johnnie Ethel Marshall Herndon. At an early age, he enlisted in the U. S. Army. Carl served two tours in Vietnam and was shot down in a helicopter in combat. He was awarded the Silver Star primarily for gallantry and valor in combat against the enemy. While serving in the military, he was also awarded the Bronze Star, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Master Army Aviator Badge. Carl served as a Military Police officer, Helicopter Pilot, Flight Instructor, Safety Officer and investigated accidents on crash sites. While at Ft. Rucker, he was named Flight Instructor of the Year. Carl retired with rank of Major in 1984 and moved to Henry County where he owned and operated Old Trail Woodcrafts.


            Carl was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Grace Herndon, Delores Herndon, Mildred Stephenson, and two brothers, Roy Herndon and Leon Herndon.


            Surviving relatives include his wife of thirty-nine years, Janice Wilson Herndon; a daughter, Lindsey Herndon Jeffrey (Peter), Eufaula; a son, Shannon Lee Herndon (Megan), Loganville, GA; two sisters, Shelby Lingenfelter, Melbourne, FL; and Judy Herndon, Frostproof,  FL; two brothers, Johnny Herndon, Dover, FL; and Bill Herndon, DeLeon Springs, FL; five grandchildren, Aubrie Herndon, Austin Herndon, Autumn Herndon, Jacob Herndon and Miles Jeffrey; a sister-in-law, Tammy Riley (Jimmy); a brother-in-law, Robert W. (Buddy) Wilson; numerous nieces and nephews.
