Charles Edward McRae, a resident of Dothan, died late Thursday afternoon, April 5, 2018 in a Dothan hospital following an extended illness. He was 76.

Mr. McRae was a native of Blue Springs, Alabama where he helped his parents on a 500-acre farm. He moved to Dothan in 1963 and was retired from Carquest Auto Parts (formerly Taylor Auto Parts) after nearly thirty-five years. He was a hard worker and valued employee. Mr. McRae knew how to get around Dothan on the side streets to avoid the circle whenever possible. He met many people over the years while working the counter or delivering parts. Most people have said he was always kind and had a smile on his face. A tad bit mischievous.

Mr. McRae lived a happy simple life. He enjoyed fishing with his brother-in-law, Frank Hill down at keys. He also went deep sea fishing with coworkers, family and friends one to two times per year for many years.

He was a great husband, father and PawPaw. He did not cook regularly, however, during the holidays, he would make the best pumpkin pies, a small task that he enjoyed.

Many see it as a chore, but he also enjoyed cutting the grass and taking care of the yard.

You could always catch him at the table reading the morning paper and drinking his coffee before work.

He was a diehard Alabama fan and loved when his oldest son and family came and watched the games with him. He was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan.

He enjoyed the trips with his daughter to buy scratch off lottery tickets.

Mr. McRae enjoyed trips with his wife most of all. They had a lot of fun together and truly enjoyed each other’s company.

Mr. McRae loved his family. Their visits and calls. He especially loved the fames they played at the holidays. Games his creative granddaughter made up. There was always much laughter, joy and fun (especially the prizes she provided).

Survivors include his wife of forty-five years, Margaret Edgman McRae, Dothan; a daughter, Betty Jo Cherry (Randy), Newton; two sons, Danny Edgman (Carolyn), Webb and William McRae, Ozark; a granddaughter, Hannah Edgman, Webb; a sister-in-law, Rebecca Edgman, Brooksville, FL.

Flowers accepted or memorial contributions to Margaret McRae, c/o Rainbow Kennels, LLC, 3837 Flowers Chapel Road, Dothan, Alabama 36305.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.  Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
