HEADLAND. . .Charles Robert Sowell, a resident of Headland, died Wednesday afternoon, February 7, 2018, in a Dothan hospital. He was 90.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 10, 2018, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Private graveside services will follow in the Headland Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland Baptist Cemetery Fund, 301 East Church Street, Headland, AL 36345 or SouthernCare Hospice, 2576 Montgomery Highway, Suite 2, Dothan, AL 36303.

Mr. Sowell was born and reared in Henry County, near Abbeville, son of the late William Robert Sowell and Lizzie Owens Sowell. He was a graduate of Abbeville High School. Mr. Sowell was one the first young men of Henry County drafted into the U. S. Army after the outbreak of the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. He settled in Headland and attended what is now Wallace Community College. Mr. Sowell worked with the City of Headland Water Department until he began a career as a letter carrier in 1959 with the Headland Post Office, a job he held until his retirement in 1990. While working with the water department, after his work day, he went into many crawl spaces in times of winter cold and near dark, under the houses of people with burst water pipes and repaired them. After retirement from the post office, he was elected and served three consecutive four-year terms on the Headland City Council. Mr. Sowell was a member of the First Baptist Church where he formerly served as a Deacon and was an active participant in the Burdeshaw-Solomon Senior Center.  He really had no hobbies, because his family was his true work and hobby but he did enjoy fishing. Charles and his wife, Jean, are very proud of the fact that all three of their children are graduates of the University of Alabama. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Cathy Sowell, three sisters, Sarah Jeter, Frances Belcher and Lou Anne Maddox and two brothers, Dr. Walter Frank Sowell and James Leonard (Jim) Sowell.

Surviving relatives include his wife of  sixty-six years, Jean Key Sowell; a daughter, Shelia Sowell Reilly, St. Petersburg, FL; a son, Charles Rene’ Sowell (Janie), Guntersville, AL; and three beloved grandchildren, Angela Reilly, Anna Grace Reilly and Grant Sowell.

His surviving children would like to express our profound appreciation for the family and life foundation he and our Mother, Jean, gave to us. We also want to thank the wonderful people of Headland, Alabama who took them and us in as almost family.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Grant Sowell, Bob Frank Williams, Roderick Bayne, Donnie Smith, John Ross Helms and Connie Parrish.
