HEADLAND…Daniel Theo York, a former resident of Headland, died Tuesday afternoon, October 18, 2016 in the Extendicare Health & Rehabilitation Center in Dothan. He was 84.


            Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 24, 2016, in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, near Headland, with Pastor Randy Dean officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends following the graveside services.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice, 2740 Headland Avenue, Dothan, AL 36303.


            Mr. York was a native of Columbia, Alabama and attended school in Headland.  He was the son of the late Miles Bartow York and Vassie Ola Kelly York. Mr. York served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War era. After serving in the military, he moved to Belle Glade, Florida where he went to work for the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Department as a motorcycle policeman. He met his future wife, Betty Sue Trammell and they were married August 4, 1955. Mr. York moved to Merritt Island, Florida in 1960 and began working with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department. He retired as a Major after thirty years employment. He was elected Brevard County Commissioner and served a four year term. Mr. York moved to Headland in 1990 where he lived until moving to Extendicare. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Headland. Mr. York was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Trammell York, five sisters, Bernice York Farmer, Mary Dell York Love, Thelma York Poole, Imogene York Penuel, and Linda York Elliott.


            Surviving relatives include two daughters, Debra York, Headland; and Judy Sims Thompson (Kevin), Ft. Valley, GA; a son, Danny York (Jholie), Ocala, FL; two sisters, Janice Wylene Dean, Ashford; and Barbara Ann Milligan, Wellington, FL; a sister-in-law, Dale Griffin; a brother-in-law, Dr. Kenneth Trammell (Bess); three grandchildren, Ryan Sims, Riley Sims and Morgan Rogers (Jack); a great-grandson, Boe Sims.


            The family would like to express their appreciation to the Extendicare Health & Rehabilitation, Hall 3, and to Gentiva Hospice for the loving care and kindness shown to Mr. York during his illness.
