David Ellington Lummus, a resident of Dothan, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at his residence surrounded by family and friends. He was 74.


Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 3 pm in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-3 pm on Saturday. Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to Wiregrass Humane Society, 255 Jerry Drive, Dothan, AL 36303 or to Respite Care Ministry, c/o First United Methodist Church, 1380 West Main Street, Dothan, Alabama 36301.


Dave was born in Montclair NJ. His early years were spent in Fairfield, CT. He graduated high school in Chatham, NJ and graduated from Nathaniel Hawthorne College in Antrim, NH. Dave was an Army Aviator. He was a member of the Headhunter 219th Aviation Company. After flight instructing in fixed wing aircraft at Ft. Rucker he flew as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) in the O-1 Bird Dog during the Vietnam War. Dave began his real estate career at Bob Hall Co. Later, he and wife Teedy began their own real estate company, Lummus Co. They successfully owned and operated the business for over 30 years. He enjoyed being involved in the local community. Dave loved giving back by serving on The City of Dothan’s Board of Zoning Adjustment for 18 years and serving several years as chairman. The outdoors and adventure always enticed Dave. He had a passion for racing cars, flying airplanes, driving boats and deer hunting. He also enjoyed spending a lot of his free time at the lake in Eufaula. But most of all Dave loved his wife, his children and his family.


Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Teedy Lummus; his daughters, Julia Lummus Kent of Dothan, AL (husband Lee Kent) and Courtney Lummus Tatum of The Woodlands, TX (husband Mark Tatum); his grandchildren, Audrey Kent and Blake Kent of Dothan and Benjamin Tatum and Brody Tatum of TX; his brother, Ed Lummus of Aurora, CO (wife Carol); his sisters-in-law, Lynn Perryman (husband Steve) and Cheryl Walters (husband Jim); his brothers-in-law, Dr. George Turk and Bill Heske (wife Patti); several nieces and nephews.


Dave is preceded in death his father, Edward I. Lummus; his mother, Alice M. Tedesco; his sister Hester Heske; and his stepmother Julia Opal Lummus.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Doug Heske, Walt Lummus, Doug Hancock, Dr. Steve Stokes and Dr. Doug Freeley.
