ABBEVILLE…..Dean Coates Smith, a former resident of the Screamer Community, of Henry County, died Friday morning, August 11, 2017, in Birmingham. She was 85.


            Graveside services will be at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, August 13, 2017, in the Chester Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with Darden Kirby officiating. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302.


            Ms. Smith was born and reared in the Screamer Community, daughter of the late John Wiley Coates and Pauline Calhoun Coates. She lived all her lifetime in Henry County and also was a resident of Twin Magnolias Assisted Living in Abbeville from 2003 until 2008 when she moved to Birmingham. Ms. Smith retired as a secretary from the Henry County Board of Education. She was a member of the Chester Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Ms. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Coates “KK” Davis and three brothers, John Coates, Pete Coates and Kenneth Coates.


            Surviving relatives include two sons, Keith Davis, Georgetown, GA; and Tony Davis (Denise), Pelham, AL;  a brother, Roger Coates (Linda), Eufaula; four grandchildren, Hunter Davis, Shelby Davis Grant (Jayron), Trevor Davis, and Hannah Davis; two great-grandchildren, Caulyer Grant and Maxxwell Davis; sisters-in-law, Mildred Coates, Donna Coates and Nancy Coates.
