Debra Lackner Mayer, a resident of Dothan, Alabama died peacefully on Friday, November 10, 2017 with her family gathered around her bed. She was 62.

Debra was born on July 27, 1956 to John and Jennie Lackner in Des Moines, Iowa. After completing high school, Debra worked in the insurance and investment industry until she married the love of her life, Henry Mayer in 1992. As a result of Henry’s military career they lived in many parts of the country. In 2002, Dothan, Alabama became their permanent home. Debra enjoyed traveling, especially in the motor home with their cats, was an avid reader and relished QVC shopping.

She leaves behind her husband, Henry and stepdaughter, Dayra and many cousins.

Debra will be buried in Des Moines, Iowa under an oak tree near her parents’ grave site. Debra’s request that there not be a memorial service will be honored. Loved ones and friends are asked to recognize her passing in their own way.

It was Debra’s wish that the auto immune diseases, which she so bravely battled for eight years, be the focus of her obituary. It was her hope that awareness and research will bring about cures and preventions. Memorial gifts may be made to the Scleroderma Foundation (scleroderma.org) or the Myositis Association (myositis.org).

Robert Byrd of Sunset Funeral Home, (334) 983-6604, is in charge of arrangements. Please call us or visit www.SunsetMemorialPark.com for more information.
