FRANKLIN, TN…On Tuesday, September 4, 2018, Dr. Deborah Hatton Beck passed away at the age of 65. Deborah was born on October 16, 1952 in Ft. Gaines, Georgia. She grew up in Abbeville, Alabama in the Screamer Community and graduated as the Valedictorian of the 1971 senior class at Abbeville High School.


     Deborah’s primary vocations throughout her life were student, teacher, administrator, mentor, researcher and faculty member at Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Deborah’s major projects included education for young children with visual impairments and training mentors for identified needs in Special Education. She received her B.S. from Auburn University, her M.S. from Florida State University and her Ph.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill. Deborah began her teaching career in the Henry County Alabama School System. She established and directed the Governor Moorehead Preschool for the Blind in Raleigh, NC and its satellite campuses. Deborah also worked at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center in Chapel Hill, NC. Her most recent position was Professor Emerita of Special Education at Peabody College at Vanderbilt University.


     Deborah was very active in local United Methodist churches throughout her life and served in varying roles from treasurer, children’s Sunday school teacher, to MYF leader. She served as one of the Board of Directors of White Plains UMC Childcare Center. Deborah’s last involvement was as a member of Christ Church Cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee. She was very active in their Healing Prayer Ministry and EFM groups. Deborah had a deep love for the Lord and strove to be a vessel of love, grace and stewardship.


     Above all, she believed her greatest accomplishment was the love for her family. She is survived in death by her husband, Raymond Lynn Beck, Franklin, TN; a daughter, Heather Hatton-Key (Chris), Ridge Spring, SC; her parents, Lamar and Betty Cotton Dominey, Abbeville, AL; a sister, Cindy Richards (Lonnie), Eufaula, AL; a niece, Courtney Richards Geiger (Aaron); a nephew, Austin Richards; a great-niece, Emma Geiger; a great-nephew, Michael Geiger; and many loving cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, David Dominey; and her niece, Kellie Richards Stepanek.


     Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, September 8, 2018, in the Liberty United Methodist Church, 341 County Road 92, Abbeville, Alabama 36310, with Reverend Ron Ball and Reverend Hunter Pugh officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 1:30 P.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary.
